Moving home

Moving home in England: which organisations should you tell?

Make a record of each update: changing one address will not update every account.

The answer in 2 lines. Before committing to a moving date, check how your existing tenancy ends and arrange essential services at the new home. On moving day, photograph meter readings and the property's condition. Update council tax, tax records, benefits and electoral registration through their separate official routes. Drivers must also update the relevant driving and vehicle records. This checklist covers England; tenancy rules and some services differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Start with these tasks

  1. Check your tenancy notice. Use Shelter England's guide to identify the rules for your tenancy before sending notice.
  2. Arrange household services. Ask your existing providers about moving, contract terms and the new property's arrangements.
  3. Create a completion record. List each account, the date you notified it and the confirmation received.

Stop: danger

  • Gas smell at either property: stop the move and contact the gas emergency service from a safe place. The official emergency contacts page confirms 0800 111 999. Use this for a suspected gas emergency.

Before moving day

Do not assume an old notice clause still describes your position. England's private renting rules changed in 2026. Read the tenancy categories and exceptions in the linked Shelter guide, then confirm the required notice and end date. Keep the notice and evidence of delivery.

Check when insurance cover should start and end, and whether possessions are covered during the move. Ask about broadband availability, installation and cancellation terms before relying on a connection.

For energy, follow Citizens Advice's moving-home instructions: notify your supplier, arrange final readings and provide a forwarding address. Use its prepayment section if the new property has a top-up meter.

On moving day

Record meter readings at both properties, keep dated photographs and send the readings to the relevant suppliers. Contact the existing energy supplier at the new home: your previous contract does not automatically cover the new address. Leave the old property's smart-meter display there.

Photograph the condition of each property, check inventories and record the key handover. Keep these records with your tenancy or purchase documents. For water-account tasks, use the National Energy Action moving checklist; its water section explains opening and closing accounts and links to supplier information.

What not to do

  • Assuming that updating a driving licence also updates the vehicle log book.
  • Cancelling old payment arrangements before checking the final bill and any refund.
  • Using a previous resident's prepayment arrangements without speaking to the energy supplier.
  • Assuming one government address update reaches every department.
  • Treating contents insurance as an automatic legal requirement for every tenant.

Update official records separately

Driving, healthcare and everyday accounts

Use the driving-record checklist and complete each applicable step separately: driving licence, vehicle log book, vehicle-tax Direct Debit and any other listed records.

Tell your GP surgery about the move. If you need a different surgery, follow the NHS registration guide to find and register with one. Also update your employer, financial accounts, insurers, subscriptions and delivery addresses directly through their usual secure channels.

Good to know

  • Ask each service for confirmation and keep it with your moving records.
  • Check support individually; this guide does not establish entitlement to a moving grant.
  • For a move outside England, check the destination's tenancy, council and healthcare arrangements before applying this checklist.

Illustrative example: Aisha and Ben photograph their final and opening meter readings, then update their accounts. They work through the driving-record checklist separately and retain confirmation of their council-tax and tax-address changes.

A made-up story, for illustration.

Sources, verification, confidence

Verified on 6 November 2026, for England. Confidence: high for the official address-update routes, driving records and energy moving procedures; medium for tenancy notice until the individual tenancy and any transitional exceptions are identified. Insurance and service-contract arrangements require individual checks.
