Dishwasher not cleaning well: what to check
Start with what is blocking the wash, before assuming a part has failed.
The answer in 2 lines. Check that dishes are not blocking the spray arms or detergent dispenser. Clean the filter only if your model has one intended for owner removal, and inspect accessible spray openings as the manual directs. Use automatic dishwasher detergent and the correct cycle for the load. White film does not automatically mean a heating failure, and cool dishes after a cycle do not prove the water never heated. Persistent poor cleaning needs a model-specific diagnosis.
The first steps
- Check the loading. Leave space between dishes, avoid nesting bowls and keep tall items away from the spray arms and dispenser door.
- Inspect the filter. With the machine off and cool, follow the manual to remove and rinse a user-serviceable filter. Do not force a fixed screen or dismantle a food-disposal assembly.
- Check spray-arm clearance. Gently rotate accessible arms by hand with the dishwasher off. Rearrange anything they hit, then try an appropriate wash cycle after reassembling everything.
Stop: danger
- Water near wiring or a wet outlet: stop using the dishwasher. Do not touch a wet plug or reach into water to disconnect it.
- Before removing maintenance parts: switch the appliance off and follow its electrical-isolation instructions. A built-in dishwasher may be hardwired.
- Broken glass: do not sweep a bare hand through the filter well. Keep children away and follow the manual's safe removal instructions.
Match the symptom to the next check
- Food particles across the load: inspect the removable filter and loading arrangement. A dirty filter is a possibility, not a confirmed diagnosis.
- One rack cleans poorly: check the spray arm serving it and whether the rack is seated as instructed.
- Detergent remains in the dispenser: check for an obstructed dispenser, unsuitable storage or a filling problem. Do not simply add another dose.
- White spots or film: consider water minerals, detergent amount and rinse-aid settings. Permanent glass damage can also look cloudy.
- Standing water, a recurring error or no improvement: stop repeating wash cycles and arrange a diagnosis.
For a general maintenance walkthrough, read Consumer Reports' dishwasher cleaning guide, then use your manual to identify which parts are removable on your appliance.
What not to do
- Using hand dishwashing liquid in an automatic dishwasher: use detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers.
- Forcing off a spray arm or enlarging its openings with a drill or sharp metal tool.
- Mixing cleaning chemicals or improvising a bleach-and-acid cleaning treatment.
- Pouring salt into the tub. Add dishwasher salt only if the appliance has a built-in softener and the manual specifies the correct compartment and product.
Clean, reload and test
Let the interior cool. Remove the filter only as instructed, rinse away trapped food and reinstall it securely. If spray arms are designed for owner removal, rinse them and clear debris using the approved method. Do not run the machine with required parts missing.
Scrape food into the trash or compost rather than routinely pre-rinsing. The EPA home-maintenance page explains this in its dishwasher section. Place dishwasher-safe items so water can reach their dirty surfaces, and keep the detergent dispenser clear.
Use fresh, dry-stored detergent in the amount directed for your conditions. Check rinse aid if your model uses it. Choose a cycle intended for the soil level rather than assuming the shortest cycle suits baked-on food. Test with an ordinary load and note what remains dirty.
When service makes sense in the US
Request service if cleaning remains poor after these checks, the appliance does not fill normally, or an error returns. Do not open the door midcycle to test the water by hand. Heating, circulation and control faults require proper diagnosis.
Keep your receipt and check the claim procedure using the FTC warranty guide. Coverage depends on the warranty and applicable state law. Ask for a written repair estimate before approving paid work.
Search the CPSC recall database for dishwashers and match your model information to any notice. For unresolved repair complaints, select your state in the official consumer protection directory and follow the linked office's process.
Good to know
- There is no universal filter-cleaning interval for every dishwasher. Use the schedule in your model's instructions and inspect sooner when performance changes.
- Cool dishes after drying are not a reliable test of wash temperature. Drying methods and cycle settings vary.
- If the dishwasher belongs to your rental, document the problem and notify the landlord before arranging a paid repair.
Illustrative example: In Phoenix, Alex notices that the upper rack stays dirty. With the machine off, Alex finds a tall utensil blocking the spray arm, then checks and rinses the removable filter according to the manual. After reloading with clear spray paths, the next cycle cleans normally. If the problem returns, Alex will record the symptoms for service.
A made-up story, for illustration.
