Air conditioning and heat pumps

How to clean your air conditioning filters safely

Start with the instructions: some filters can be washed, others need replacing.

The answer in 2 lines. You may be able to clean the accessible filters in your indoor air conditioning unit yourself, provided its instructions explain how. Stop the appliance and isolate its electricity supply before opening the user-access panel. Remove dust using the specified method; wash a filter only if the instructions explicitly allow it, and refit it completely dry. Disposable or specialist filters may need replacing instead. Cleaning a filter does not replace servicing, refrigerant work or any inspection required for the system.

Start here

  1. Find the instructions for the exact model. Check which panel you may open, whether its filters are washable and how to isolate the power.
  2. Stop the appliance, then unplug it or use its identified electrical isolator as instructed. A remote control alone is not electrical isolation.
  3. Remove only the accessible user-serviceable filters. Photograph their position before taking them out, and stop if access requires dismantling the unit.

Stop: danger

  • Water and electricity: do not spray or pour water into the indoor or outdoor unit. Do not touch wiring or internal electrical parts.
  • Unsafe access: leave a high or awkwardly positioned unit to a competent professional if you cannot reach it safely. Do not balance on furniture.
  • Damage or overheating: stop using the appliance if you notice scorching, a damaged cable or water reaching electrical parts. Arrange an inspection before restarting.

Clean according to the filter type

Check the filter description before choosing a method. A reusable mesh filter, a disposable insert and a specialist air-cleaning filter are not interchangeable. If the instructions are missing or unclear, ask for the correct maintenance instructions before proceeding.

  1. Open the user-access panel without forcing clips or hinges.
  2. Remove the filter in the direction shown in the instructions, avoiding the fins and components behind it.
  3. If vacuum cleaning is permitted, remove dust gently without stretching or tearing the material.
  4. If washing is permitted, follow the specified water temperature and cleaning method. Do not assume detergent is suitable.
  5. Allow a washable filter to dry fully using the method in the instructions.
  6. Check for damage, refit it in the correct direction and close the panel before restoring power.

Where household cleaning stops

Keep your work to the parts explicitly intended for the user. Cleaning coils, investigating a blocked condensate drain, removing internal mould, repairing electrics or opening refrigerant pipework requires appropriate expertise. A persistent smell, dripping water or weak airflow after filter maintenance needs investigation rather than repeated washing.

For refrigerant work, use the GOV.UK qualifications guidance to understand which qualifications apply. Ask the technician to confirm their qualification covers the proposed work. Where company certification is required, check their evidence against the requirements explained in the official company-certification guidance.

What not to do

  • Washing a disposable or specialist filter because it looks similar to a washable mesh filter.
  • Using bleach, disinfectant spray, a pressure washer or a stiff brush without explicit instructions permitting it.
  • Refitting a damp or damaged filter, or running the unit without its required filters.

How often, and who pays?

Use the maintenance schedule for your model and check its filters when the instructions recommend. Dust, pets and frequent operation can affect how quickly they become dirty. There is no cleaning interval in this guide that can safely replace the appliance instructions.

If you rent, ask your landlord for the instructions and an explanation of the agreed routine maintenance. Report faults in writing and obtain agreement before commissioning work. The GOV.UK repairs page explains the main division of responsibilities; use it alongside your tenancy agreement rather than assuming every cooling-system task belongs to the tenant.

In England

Filter cleaning, professional servicing and energy inspections are different tasks. Consult the official air conditioning inspection page to check whether your system falls within the inspection requirements. For shared or larger installations, ask the person managing the building to confirm the arrangements.

The detailed government inspection guide explains the scope for England and Wales. Do not assume the same administrative requirements apply in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Good to know

  • Keep a maintenance note recording what you cleaned or replaced and any remaining symptoms.
  • A clean filter may help airflow, but it cannot establish whether the whole system is working correctly.
  • Ask for a written servicing scope so you know whether filters, drainage and other components are included.

Illustrative example: in Bristol, Hannah notices weaker airflow. Her instructions identify a removable, washable mesh filter. She isolates the appliance, follows the cleaning directions and waits until the filter is fully dry before refitting it. The airflow improves, but a persistent drip remains, so she stops using the unit and arranges an inspection.

A made-up story, for illustration.

Sources, verification, confidence

Verified on 5 November 2026, for England. Confidence: high for the distinction between filter maintenance, regulated refrigerant work and air conditioning inspections; medium for the household cleaning sequence, which must be checked against the exact appliance instructions. No universal washing method or cleaning interval has been established for domestic models.
